Callum rolled onto his side and snorted in amusement. The human, Laramie, was stretched out sound asleep beside him, trusting him foolishly with his life, yet again. He grunted in disgust; there was that word again; trust.

The things he'd allowed Laramie do to him earlier that evening had shocked him. He'd never considered being on the receiving end before. But when Laramie had requested the privilege, he'd felt compelled to grant approval. "Because you do things like this." Callum lifted the blanket and peered under it, to attract Laramie's attention.

"I'm just trying to stay warm. You don't exactly give off much heat when you're asleep." Laramie snatched the blanket from Callum's hand and wrapped it back over his head.

"What if I were to kill you while you slept?"

Laramie whipped the blanket off his head in irritation. "If you were so inclined, I'd be dead already, wouldn't I? I've certainly given you enough reasons to dispose of me." He grunted, rhythmically, in succession, and tucked his body further into Callum's chest. He smiled, knowingly, when Callum wrapped him up and pulled him closer. Manipulating the emotions of vampires was slightly more intricate than with humans, but just as easily achieved through careful observation and planning.

Callum brushed lightly at Laramie's hair and dropped his face to inhale the scent of it. He kissed Laramie's head and exhaled, sorrowfully, remembering.

"My daughter used to do that," Callum said.

When he'd emitted the grunting sequence, Laramie had known it would encourage Callum's paternal instinct to protect him, but he hadn't expected it to trigger actual memories, and he certainly hadn't expected Callum to share those memories with him.

"She was the most precious thing I'd ever set eyes on." Callum reached back for his bedside table and removed a small locket, popping it open for Laramie to see the two pictures it contained.

Laramie sat up and sincerely studied the set of images. He brushed his fingers across the worn edges of the locket, sensing the wear had been the result of Callum stroking its surface as he gazed upon the faces of his wife and daughter.
